<image:title>Blog Articles - The DfE White Paper ‘Every Child Achieving and Thriving’ (Feb 2026) through a Speech Bubbles lens by Elizabeth Kennedy - Creativity and the Arts</image:title>
<image:caption>We welcome the white paper’s recognition that children thrive when academic learning is combined with arts, culture and enrichment. That artistic approaches “ignite curiosity”, “spark creativity” and broaden horizons. A revitalised arts curriculum is presented as important to supporting children’s development and in becoming “artists, creators and citizens”. The “narrow to broad” shift is one of the most significant for Speech Bubbles with oracy being embedded across the curriculum and a new Enrichment Framework defining a minimum offer for every school. Crucially, arts and culture are named as one of the five required enrichment domains, alongside civic engagement, sport, nature and wider life skills. There is a commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum that explicitly values creative subjects alongside literacy, numeracy, science and humanities. Recognition that participation in creative and cultural activities supports wellbeing and longer‑term achievement for all children, including those with SEND.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The DfE White Paper ‘Every Child Achieving and Thriving’ (Feb 2026) through a Speech Bubbles lens by Elizabeth Kennedy - Communication and oracy</image:title>
<image:caption>In the paper communication is framed as a foundational life skill, essential to learning, mental health, social connection and future employment. There appears to be a commitment to embedding oracy in the curriculum, and developing a new national oracy framework to support primary teachers in explicitly teaching, assessing and developing children’s spoken language. Inclusive oracy is covered in the ‘Narrow to Broad’ chapter and is part of the broader effort to ensure that all children, including those with SEND can develop strong communication skills and thrive in their education. It is vital that this is approached in an inclusive style for all the ways in which children communicate. The paper also highlights early language development as critical, particularly in the early years, and links communication development to reduced inequality, improved attainment and better transitions into school. At Speech Bubbles and as part of the Speech, Language and Communication Alliance we will continue to push this being an inclusive support where all forms of communication are valued.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The DfE White Paper ‘Every Child Achieving and Thriving’ (Feb 2026) through a Speech Bubbles lens by Elizabeth Kennedy - Confidence and self-expression</image:title>
<image:caption>In the paper the importance of fostering confidence through strong speaking skills and inclusive oracy is discussed. This is seen as essential for preparing children to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The document stresses that confidence grows when children are not passive recipients of knowledge, but active participants who question, challenge and articulate their thinking. The Speech Bubbles programme is ideally positioned to support children’s self-expression and development of their differing communication styles through drama techniques and creative storytelling. Communication is not just about the spoken word. We are hopeful that the focus on oracy and inclusive oracy in this paper will support all children’s communication development.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The DfE White Paper ‘Every Child Achieving and Thriving’ (Feb 2026) through a Speech Bubbles lens by Elizabeth Kennedy - Drama, performance and expressive learning</image:title>
<image:caption>While drama is not named as a standalone subject, it is arguably encompassed within the paper’s reference to expressive arts, theatre, live performance and enrichment in arts and culture. Drama is implicitly positioned as powerful tools for developing oracy and communication, building confidence and self-esteem and enabling children to explore identity, belonging, perspective and collaboration.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The DfE White Paper ‘Every Child Achieving and Thriving’ (Feb 2026) through a Speech Bubbles lens by Elizabeth Kennedy - In conclusion</image:title>
<image:caption>The DfE white paper emphasises the importance of combining academic learning with arts, culture, and enrichment for children's development. There is a shift from a narrow to broad curriculum, embedding oracy and defining a minimum enrichment offer for every school. Creative subjects are valued alongside core academic areas, with recognition of their positive impact on wellbeing and achievement, including for children with SEND. The paper positions communication as a foundational life skill and commits to inclusive oracy, supporting all children’s language development and reducing inequalities. Speech Bubbles greets this paper with cautious optimism.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - How stories and drama can help children recognise emotions better By Tom Brain</image:title>
<image:caption>For the young children in Years 1 and 2 we work with in Speech Bubbles, and those with Special Educational Needs, recognition of emotions is an aspect of life that they find particularly challenging. They may be able to understand basic feelings such as happiness, sadness, and anger, but then may find it challenging to apply these to more complex emotions, for example fear or frustration.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - How stories and drama can help children recognise emotions better By Tom Brain</image:title>
<image:caption>Therefore, careful use of drama activities can help children to understand, notice, and react appropriately to various emotions. Through the use of story, this can be done in a safe and fun exploratory space where the pressure is removed from getting everything ‘right’, encouraging young people to practise this skill and improve it for use in the real world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The Story Square by Sarah Kadri</image:title>
<image:caption>In this brief essay, I explore the importance of free crafting and communal playback to the children’s experience of building communication skills. Dewey states that, regarding learning, ‘everything depends on the quality of experience’ and in an educational setting usually associated with ‘ennui and boredom’ (1997, p. 27), the story square provides a radical shift, where children take ownership of their story - this is the quality mark of experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The Story Square by Sarah Kadri</image:title>
<image:caption>In Speech Bubbles, children are encouraged to use their bodies and ideas creatively and boldly to express themselves. What the story square brings in particular is the fundamental right to freedom of thought - contrary to the schooling system which rewards conformity and blind submission to authority and prescribed curricula - as the child is never told what to think, never prompted to a better thought. There is simply no right or wrong.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60fe8d94d62921227d256be9/5eee15b6-239b-4d6b-b10a-6629c75db334/children+acting+in+square</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog Articles - The Story Square by Sarah Kadri</image:title>
<image:caption>Even though no attention is granted to accuracy, this does not mean that the child’s story is senseless or without literary qualities. In fact, stories are often complex and display implied canonicity. The narrative frame is poised between ‘once upon a time’ and ‘happy ever after’, whilst stretched and altered to encompass the surprises and twists that live in the child’s mind.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The Story Square by Sarah Kadri</image:title>
<image:caption>The collective dramatization of the child’s story calls every member into a type of organic play, where children improvise with each other on what the characters do and how they respond – this skill is the natural prerogative of childhood.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The Story Square by Sarah Kadri</image:title>
<image:caption>Paley states that to leave the story untold and unacted, makes ‘the process incomplete’ (Armstrong, 2006, p.30). Particularly for storytelling, the enjoyment lies in the varying sounds, voices, and moving bodies that help to make the story what it is. Siegel suggests that ‘we are always in a perpetual state of being created and creating ourselves’ (2020, p.221). It is through the various layers of creative processes that the children deepen and build on their sense of self.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The Story Square by Sarah Kadri</image:title>
<image:caption>At that point I squarely knew that this exercise was not about me or my thoughts, nor the accuracy of language. The story square is all about the child, and it is only through ‘unbiased observation that our compassion emerges for each child we serve’ (McTamaney, 2007, p.46).</image:caption>

<image:caption>3) Pupils feel safe in the process, that no matter what they do, they will not be exposed to ridicule, relentless assessment and testing, fear of being wrong or making errors. We use the PACE model as a theoretical and practical framework for how we are with the child participants. This model comes from the work of Dan Hughes and stands for Playful, Accepting, Curious and Empathic. Speech Bubbles is a place to try things out, to take risks and have fun. .</image:caption>

We include movement activities akin to physical theatre or dance. We build in soundscapes and song where appropriate. The stories that are acted out can be presented in any form and many take inspiration from popular forms cartoons or digital gaming.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The Value and Success of Speech Bubbles by Louise Pendry (part three)</image:title>
<image:caption>Speech Bubbles is monitored and evaluated robustly - the pre and post assessments mark the changes in the children’s behaviour and attainment in school. However, there is not a defined benchmark of communication success that all children must hit or a grading system that measures success. Instead, Speech Bubbles ends as it begins and recognises the journey to effective communication isn’t linear and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. The super clever but too-shy-to-put-their-hand-up girl giggles in the session and puts her hand up more in class.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - The Value and Success of Speech Bubbles by Louise Pendry (part three)</image:title>
<image:caption>A Senior Leader in one school told me that one of the things that she liked about Speech Bubbles was the fact that it ran over a year. It wasn’t a quick programme that popped up and disappeared. It meant, as a school, by the second term of delivery, they were all starting to acknowledge and appreciate the difference in the children. It resonated with me. I delivered more Speech Bubbles sessions to groups of children in the last year than my son has received in Speech Therapy from the NHS in three years.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - Speech Bubbles from the Drama Practitioners Perspective by Louise Pendry (part two)</image:title>
<image:caption>When children arrive in a Speech Bubbles session you haven’t selected them to be there, their teacher has. As such, you have limited knowledge of the make-up of their communication profile, so you aren’t there to meet a hierarchy of need in the session. This allows you to work in the moment, holding the different needs in the space, and identifying the different communication profiles children exhibited in your group. The child that is super clever, but too shy to put their hand up, sits next to the child who is EAL, and they sit next to the child with ADHD.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - Speech Bubbles from the Drama Practitioners Perspective by Louise Pendry (part two)</image:title>
<image:caption>Speech Bubbles provides a framework for practitioners to adopt in their delivery. Yet, as a practitioner you choose games and activities that meet the needs of your children. Your choice of games can, much like the sensory bucket example, create an environment that supports all the children to feel safe and regulated before you ask them to make a sound. Making those choices can then also allow us to support their motor skills as they move their body through space, develop their attention, focus, listening skills, and so much more before words even come into it. This is one of the many reasons I think Speech Bubbles is so special. Children are learning through their whole body for 40 minutes over a 24-week period.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - Speech Bubbles from a Parents Perspective by Louise Pendry (part one)</image:title>
<image:caption>As a mother to a currently pre-verbal, five-year-old child, there are moments in the day where I feel the silence - at the end of school there is no conversation about the day, the things that brought him joy, and the things that might have made him sad. Don’t get me wrong - there is joy. My son has taught me the delight in sharing a gaze, a giggle, and a cuddle. We always leave hand-in-hand, unless he wants to eat his crisps. Yet, I cannot deny there is an absence of knowledge or understanding about how he sees the world he’s living in, when I am not in it. I work hard to see things through his eyes and he has in his own little way, has made me a more empathetic person. I work differently because of him, and I think about the people in my groups more carefully because of him.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - Speech Bubbles from a Parents Perspective by Louise Pendry (part one)</image:title>
<image:caption>Much later in our journey, I met a Sensory Occupational Therapist who assessed his profile and let me moan about the attention bucket. It turned out he had a low sensory register. He needed movement and exposure to tactile resources in order to wake his body up to engage with the world around him. In many ways, the attention bucket goes against how he best learns and my maternal, instinctive, realisation of this is exactly why I didn't like it. He is judged on his ability to be still and attend, compliant perhaps, without thought to the movement his body needs. We tried a sensory bin. Toys that could have been in a bucket were now hidden in rice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As the first of the two sessions got underway, I could see how excited and confident some students were and others were a little more quiet. Speech Bubbles sessions, have a real focus on listening and respecting each other and I was able to see how important this was as some participants got a little too excited by the story and struggled to make time for others. This message was delivered in a gentle, fun, and encouraging tone that allowed all the children to keep playing and being creative without judgement.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - Being a Young Trustee - Chapter 2 - Thankfully, I found Speech Bubbles</image:title>
<image:caption>Thankfully, I found Speech Bubbles. Not only is the organisation’s mission to support children with their confidence, communication and well-being unarguably amazing, but the team is also committed to building a welcoming and inclusive Board. For example: I was offered a call before applying to understand what would be involved; I never felt at a disadvantage for lacking prior Trustee experience; and the team genuinely wanted to hear what I would need to be able to bring my full self and voice to the table.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Articles - Being a Young Trustee - Chapter 4 - Are You Following Through on Your Commitments?</image:title>
<image:caption>If you work at a charity or on a charity Board, who’s represented, and how are you following through on commitments to bring in other voices and perspectives? Are you following through on your commitments…? Are you creating an environment where young people are able to say what they want to say, and know their contributions are valued in the way they should be?</image:caption>

The programme itself has been extremely effective for the young people and TAs involved, and the training for our practitioners has been incredibly helpful and engaging. The monitoring and evaluation of our work is hugely important for us and the systems Speech Bubbles have in place for this are detailed yet easy to use. <image:caption>“Midway through a recent Bubbles session, I caught one six year old telling her partner, 'Speech Bubbles is a place to feel happy.' when she thought her partner was too sad to join in a game. Minutes later they were diving into the ocean together & sunbathing in Australia. A few months ago I might not have thought too much about that exchange. Since joining Speech Bubbles, I see it differently & appreciate the layers of communication going into that moment - to observe someone else, read body language, listen and take time to think about what to say to make it better. Speech Bubbles has already become an integral part of our company chat as we constantly now chat about the potential of the arts to make a difference to the many children facing communication challenges. We have had a warm welcome into a network of people all passionate about ensuring everyone's (ours included) authentic voice is heard. I couldn't be happier to be a part of it.” Louise Pendry, Bounce Theatre</image:caption>

<image:title>Story FUNd - STORYTELLERS</image:title>
<image:caption>SUBMIT YOUR STORY There are 3 simple steps to joining in with Story FUNd 1. Write a story! (max 450 words) and email it in a Word Document to lizzie@speechbubbles.org.uk 2. Complete the storyteller consent form here. 3. Make a donation to Speech Bubbles, we suggest £50 per story here. STORYTELLER GUIDELINES When you donate and submit a story to the Speech Bubbles Story Funder, we want you to feel free to be imaginative, expressive and playful. Your creativity is what makes this fundraiser so special. To help ensure that all stories can be shared proudly as part of our work, we ask that submissions: Are no longer than 450 words - please send stories as Word Documents. Do not bring Speech Bubbles CIO into disrepute - please avoid content that is discriminatory, harmful, or likely to cause offence. Are suitable to be heard by a general audience, including children (though they do not need to be children’s stories). Respect the dignity and safety of others, avoiding personal attacks, hate speech, or anything that promotes violence or abuse. Do not include confidential, private or identifying information about real people without permission. Are your own original work, please don’t submit AI generated stories. We’re not here to censor creativity — we simply want to make sure that stories reflect the values of respect, inclusion and care that guide all of Speech Bubbles’ work. If you’re unsure whether your idea fits, feel free to check in with us. Otherwise, write boldly and enjoy the process — we can’t wait to bring your story to life. YOUR PERFORMER Stories are usually matched at random to one of our wonderful performers. If there’s a particular kind of voice or lived experience that you feel would really bring your story to life, you’re welcome to let us know — only if you wish. Our performer pool is small, so we can’t promise a perfect match every time, but we’ll always try our best to honour your intention with care.</image:caption>
